What is class 142?

Class 142 is a type of diesel multiple-unit train that has been in operation in the UK since the mid-1980s. They were built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) and were primarily designed for suburban and regional services, although they were also used on longer distance routes. The class 142 trains have a maximum speed of 75 miles per hour and are powered by either one or two diesel engines. They are notable for their distinctive appearance, with a sloping front and a long, narrow body. Despite their age, many class 142 trains are still in use today, although some have been retired from service due to their older technology and emissions.
